About us

HFD (HarmerFitz Douglas Ltd) is a design-led architectural practice, committed to listening to, understanding and delivering projects that exceed the expectations of the clients brief. Our approach is contextual and sensitive; working with any existing characteristics and qualities to develop a coherent contemporary solution.

Founded by Amanda Harmer in 2011, and later joined by former colleague from Associated Architects, Susie Douglas, HarmerFitz Douglas is small but responsive – with an extended network of resources that can be utilised to cater for projects of all sizes. Building, and maintaining, good personal relationship is key to the way we work and, due to our size, we ensure Director involvement on a day-to-day basis and throughout the course of a project.

With extensive experience across a range of sectors including commercial, office, education (University, independent and state sectors), leisure and residential, we can offer a complete service as required:

– Feasibility studies and concept generation
– Interior design and fit-out, including bespoke/built-in furniture items
– Full design services (from initial concept through to contract administration and site supervision)
– New-build and refurbishment projects
– Works to historic structures including Listed Buildings
– Planning and building regulations liaison and applications

Our approach is open and friendly, with a strong track record of working successfully with other members of the design team, as well as contractors and manufacturers, that underpins our collaborative ethos.

Sustainability is inherent in everything we do – rather than an add-on – and we seek to maximise the potential of every project whilst minimising its environmental impact.

We aim to produce architecture that works well, respects it’s surroundings and quietly delights all who use it.
